We visited this castle in January on a cold, rainy day and thought we would give it another try. It was a beautiful day and the leaves have been popping out for a couple of weeks, so everything is looking green.
This is the top entrance to the castle. We left through the lower entrance and took the cobblestone road down to the village.
The queen at the front door. I think she wants to paint it a royal blue.
This is the fourth and final gatehouse on the way into the castle. Grandma especially liked the lilac bush and all of the green bushes.

Courtyard of the schloss.
We took the tour of the inside of the castle, but I couldn't take any pictures, so this is where we exited the castle. There are beautiful views from every window.
These canons dated back to the 1500's.
A look through a peep hole in the tower
A view from the upper wall of the castle

A look over the wall to the village below.
This is the path down the hill on the cobblestone road and through the gates into the village below.

Gates all along the road to protect access to the castle, coming out of the tunnel.

Looking back at the tunnel.
Braunfels Village
At the end of a 1/4 mile walk from the castle you come to the Braunfels village. Lots of timber houses and shops around the platz.
Looking back at the entry gate to the village.
We found the Eise shop and took a little break.
We stopped by a little pond as we left town. This pond is connected to a hot springs about 100 meters away, so it is a constant 11 degrees Centigrade all year. It is a bird refuge and many stay here year round
Wetzlar
We traveled about 15 minutes up the road to take a look at the village of Wetzlar, We heard there was an American hamburger shop in town, so we thought we would see if we could find it. The GPS told us to turn too late so I missed the turn, but took the next turn and found a parking place. We walked over this bridge and...
Beautiful stone bridge that spans the Lahn River, that flows into the Rhein River. The flowering chestnut trees are at the far end of the bridge.
We had beautiful views of parks and the village ahead as we crossed the bridge. This is a closer look at the chestnut tree flowers.
Once over the bridge, guess what we spotted... Mr. B's Burgers! Great burgers and they also had IBC Root Beer and Cream Soda!
A bride and groom returned from their wedding photo-shoot on the bridge.
There were quaint shops and timber buildings throughout the village.
This is the Dom (pronounced dome) of the village. Wetzlar was once the head of the holy Roman Empire in this area of Europe and this cathedral dates back to the Roman occupation about 100 AD.
Our parting view of the village of Wetzlar from the stone bridge.
