Versailles Palace

Our Walk Through the Palace

Many of the streets of Paris and surrounding suburbs have tree-lined streets.

We walked 20 minutes from our hotel to the front gate of the Versailles Palace. We were excited to see this beautiful palace and thought that getting there early would get us in the gate quicker. When we got there we joined the throngs of tourists getting off tour buses and myriads of school children that were there to see the palace too. It was amazing to see the gold glittering in the morning sunlight.

The front ticket entrance to the palace is through the building to the left.

The main gate to the palace grounds, but that is not used for tourist entry into the palace.

Two levels of the chapel.

Oil painting covers the ceilings and walls of the palace in most every room, and then there are framed oil paintings hanging next to stone sculptures, or tapestry. It is amazing.

This is the hall of mirrors. These are original. Mirrors this size were unheard of until King Louis XIV demanded them.

The outside of the palace is covered with beautiful sculptures, gold, and stonework.

The queen received guests in an area in her bedroom.

We stopped for a few pastry treats at Angelina's. It brought a smile to grandma's face.

She delighted in an outrageous cup of hot chocolate. It was barely liquid. I think you could stand a spoon up in it!

My delight was the chocolate eclair filled with more thick rich chocolate mousse.

We walked off the treats by putting in 16 kilometers, a little over 10 miles, hiking through the palace and the grounds.

The palace grounds and a little lake.

This is a main fountain on the way to the big lake.

A closer look at the gold leaf sculptutes in the fountain.
