THE MOUNTAINS WITH DAN AND VERNA

The last days of summer linger a little longer, no color changes yet, but it was a cool day portending the inevitable spray of color that is fall. We dressed for cold weather, but it was still warm in the sun.

We stopped as we traveled up the Alpine Loop to take in the spectacle of Mt. Timpanogos and the panorama of the canyon and its fresh smells.

As we were winding through the aspens on the serpentine Alpine Loop road, we saw a couple of moose checking us out. We stopped and took their picture as they took us in with a cautious eye. We didn't venture close too far from the road and thanks to a telephoto lens we were able to get a view of our friends, Bullwinkle and Shy Guy in their backyard.

Dan and Verna look so comfortable in the mountains... or on the beach.

We enjoyed the opportunity to spend time together and share "our mountain canyon" with Dan and Verna.

There were a few wildflowers still in bloom, but most were showing the signs of summer's end.

We continued our drive through the aspen groves, to the summit of 8,060 feet and down the into the valley below to Cascade Springs at about 6,500 feet.

The springs were flowing as usual, but the pond levels were down about 4-5 feet, so they showed a lot of moss and not the deep clear water filled with German Brown trout. It was comparatively quiet compared to the summer crowds, so we had the place to ourselves with an occasional passer-by.

You can always spot a Californian in the mountains... they have the layered look in September.

The sound of the rushing waters that have just emerged from the perpetual springs above was both a deafening din and a rhythmic roar that added a beautiful dimension to the forest that surrounded us.

We had a great time being together and sharing the mountain experience with family. We'll have to do this again in a few weeks to see Mother Nature's colorful quilt that will cover the landscape.
