After a busy week we are able to spend some time seeing sites around town. This day we went to the Tres Ojos caves not far from our apartment and right on the way to the airport, so I knew the way pretty well. On top it looks like a park with a sink hole-type pond.
We paid our 100 pesos each (about $2.80) and entered the cave by walking down steps into the cave and came around a corner to see the first of three blue ponds (eyes) in the cave.
Here is mom on the walk back up from the first blue pond. The water still drips from the stalagtites. It was an overcast day, but still about 85 and sticky, especially down in the grotto areas.
We heard some excitement at the top of the stairs as an iguana was crossing the sidewalk. You can see the tail in front of the boy in blue in the center of the picture.
We got to the top of the stairs and over to the iguana in time to get a few looks at the critter.
A little further up the trail and down several flights of stairs was a bigger blue ojo with a raft ferrying passengers to the other side.
We got on board the raft and went across to see what was on the other side of the pond. As we looked back we could see more people coming down the stairs we had just come down.
We got off the raft and walked through the cave. We saw bats, birds, wasp nests were reported and the usual stalagtites and stalagmites in the darknes of the cave, then light and a beautiful view of the sink hole lake that we saw from the top.
The sunlight was so bright after being in the cave, even on an overcast day. There were fish in the clear water of the lake and we could hear frogs croaking. The vines hung down to the water and it felt like a different jungle-world.
As we headed back to the cave we looked back to see the view of the cave and the lake beyond.
Mom especially loved the cute little furry bats hanging from the ceiling of the cave.
This is the last of the tres ojos. It is a smaller pond but blue and beautiful.
We said our good-byes to our last iguana and we headed out of the cave and back to the car for the final adventure of the day... driving home in the DR
